SCOTCH PLAINS, NJ -- The Township of Scotch Plains in conjunction with the Patrick’s Downtown Race to Summer 5K Race Committee will unveil a public light project on the Alan Augustine Village Green (430 Park Ave.) on Thursday, June 13, at approximately 9:00 p.m. after the 4th Annual Patrick’s Downtown Race to Summer 5K takes place.
The 5K was started in 2015 by a local group of runners who wanted to see a great event to better Scotch Plains’ downtown. This group of runners partnered with another group of local residents who previously put on the Patrick J. Allocca Memorial 5K. Together, the Patrick’s Downtown Race to Summer 5K raises money to do something special in downtown Scotch Plains and for charitable recipients.
After three years of successful races with thousands of runners and sponsorships, the Patrick’s Downtown Race to Summer 5K Committee unanimously agreed to spend money on a public art light project in downtown Scotch Plains.
On September 5, 2018, the Patrick’s Downtown Race to Summer 5K committee presented a check for $12,850 to the Scotch Plains Mayor and Council to go towards a public light project on the Alan Augustine Village Green in downtown Scotch Plains.
“This light project will be something all residents can enjoy when they visit downtown,” said Mayor Al Smith. “Public art is a very key component of Downtown Redevelopment, and this light project will set the stage for future art projects. I thank the members of the Patrick’s Downtown Race to Summer 5K Committee for their ideas, dedication, and efforts in improving our downtown.”
Registration is still open for the Patrick’s Downtown Race to Summer 5K on Thursday. Check-in begins at 6:00pm on June 13, with the Family Fun Run at 7:00 p.m. The 5K race starts at 7:30 p.m. Click the link to register https://www.scotchplainsnj.gov/race-to-summer-5k/
This year’s race will use the same 5K course, starting and finishing across from the fire house on Senger Place, and conclude with a live band performance and BBQ from the Stagehouse Tavern on the grounds of the Scotch Plains Municipal Building.
The race is also sponsored and supported by the Township of Scotch Plains and is one of the qualifying races that are part of the Mayor’s Wellness Campaign.
