March 25, 2020: In the intensive care unit

The Holy Name Medical Center in Teaneck, Bergen County needs no introduction for its part in the battle against the coronavirus in New Jersey. And Jeff Rhode has seen it up close, both in person and through his camera lens.

A longtime photojournalist in New Jersey, Rhode has been the staff photographer at Holy Name for the last eight years and worked in the photo department of the Newark Star-Ledger prior to that.

The gravity of that role obviously changed in the last month, as the hospital was inundated with COVID-19 cases in a county that has been hard-hit by the disease. Rhode was the only photographer inside the hospital during that time, and NJ Spotlight brings some of his images together in a single photo essay.

“I respect every one of the people who has stepped up and is doing whatever it takes to get this virus under control,” Rhode said this weekend of the people he has photographed, from doctors to nurses to EMTs, technicians and custodial staffers. “They are the most dedicated people I’ve ever seen and will do anything they can to help.”
