Each week, the Fanwood-Scotch Plains YMCA (FSPY) highlights a member of its staff, a YMCA member, or volunteer as part of their We Are Y Wednesdays series. Today, meet Maria Kreyer, one of their friendly and helpful Membership Representatives who is a longtime member of FSPY.

“I have been working here just under a year, but I was a member here for over 20 years beforehand. I also worked here briefly a long time ago teaching youth sports classes. One day, I was walking by the front desk and one of the staff members was on the phone. She didn’t know the answer to the person’s question, and I answered it for her. On the way out, she said, ‘you should work here.’ I wasn’t sure if the hours would work, but I filled out an application and thought, we’ll see what happens.

I had thought about it previously, but the timing wasn’t right. Now that I do work here, I love the people, the members, the staff, just the whole positive atmosphere. I love the seniors in particular. My mom and dad came here for years. For my mom, who passed away a few years ago, she was here four times a week. I saw the difference it made in her life and how the seniors make a difference in each other’s lives. For her, it was socialization; they looked out for each other. There’s really a sense of community among themselves.

It really saved her when my dad passed away, and she was lonely. It gave her a sense of community and friendships. In addition, my kids took swim lessons here and continued to be members until they moved. I also continue to be an active member, taking Spin classes, strength classes and use the Wellness Center. I love the people here.”
