FANWOOD/SCOTCH PLAINS, NJ -- We are Y Wednesdays: Meet Deirdre, one of our dedicated swim instructors, lifeguards and deck supervisors.

“I started working here as a swim instructor in August 2017, started lifeguarding in July 2018 and became a deck supervisor this past Spring. I actually did not like swimming as a child. I refused to put my head under water. We had a summer house in the Poconos and I took private lessons.

Deirdre says after that, around age 6 or 7, she started to love swimming and being in the water, swimming at the beach or in a lake.

"I had a friend in high school who was a year above me and worked at the Y. She really liked it, so I decided to apply," Deirdre says. "The people who work in Aquatics, we are all so close."

"During my senior year of high school, two of the other swim instructors and I would all get dinner together after our shifts. I also like working with people of all ages in the pool – you have the kids, the people your age, the parents. You’re always meeting and talking to different people. It makes the job fun.”

The Fanwood-Scotch Plains YMCA is currently hiring and has a number of open positions, including those in Aquatics. To view all our job opportunities, visit fspymca.org/employment.
