Each week, the Fanwood-Scotch Plains YMCA highlights a member of its staff, a YMCA member or volunteer as part of their We Are Y Wednesdays series. Today, meet Leta Schrader, a wonderful School Age Child Care (SACC) aftercare counselors at McGinn School who also worked as a camp counselor this summer.
“This is my third year working at the YMCA camp and I’ll be going into my third year in the after care program this fall. I retired from the high school after 25 years working as a school secretary. I was then asked if I’d like to come back and began working at McGinn as a lunchroom general aide," Schrader said.
At McGinn,Schrader learned about the Y camp and asked about working over the summer.
"I wanted to keep busy. I was so used to being around the kids and parents – you need to have a purpose when you get up in the morning," Schrader said. "I love the kids, that’s the big thing for me. They put a smile on my face, they really do. They bring a lot of fulfillment to me. Working for the Y is great.
Schrader finds the schedules are flexible and as an older counselor, the Y is understanding and acceptable of her needs.
"One of the things I enjoy about working here is that the Y is a very opening and welcoming place for people of all ages and backgrounds," she said. "I like working with the kids and the younger counselors. I feel like they keep me young.”
