SCOTCH PLAINS_FANWOOD The YMCA of Fanwood-Scotch Plains will host a Triwomen kickoff for Danskin Women’s Sprint Triathlon.

Have you ever thought about trying a Triathlon? Come join Triwomen, a group of local women who are preparing to participate in the Danskin Women's Sprint Triathlon on September 8th, 2013. The group is beginning its 7th year and has helped over 700 women successfully complete a sprint triathlon.

Triwomen is a collaborative amongst the Fanwood-Scotch Plains YMCA, The Westfield Area Y and the JCC of Central New Jersey. Participation in the Triwomen Group is free and open to all women in our area. Members of the group range in age from 14 to 70+. The group is lead by volunteer leaders who have experience competing in triathlons and are passionate about helping others achieve this goal in a friendly, non-competitive environment. Triwomen will provide inspiration, education, and opportunities for women of all ages, shapes and sizes who are interested in taking on the challenge of completing a sprint triathlon in 2013.

Last year 130 Triwomen participants finished the Danskin Women’s Sprint Triathlon. In 2011, 150 participants finished.

The Alternative Press spoke with Amy Carow, the leader of the Triwomen Group, who has been the point person for 7 years. “The mission is to encourage, educate, and inspire women of all ages, shapes and sizes to finish a sprint triathlon.” Participants will swim ½ mile of the Sandy Hook Bay, cycle for 10 miles, and run 5K. There are 25 women who have volunteered as leaders, all of whom have done the triathlon.

Triwomen Group was briefly profiled in Join The Club, a book by Tina Rosenberg. The subtitle of the book is “How peer pressure can transform the world”. Tina Rosenberg is a winner of the Pulitzer Prize.

For those who are interested, the Triwomen Group is hosting two informational “Kickoff” meetings this month. The first meeting is on Thursday, January 24th at 7:30 pm at the Fanwood-Scotch Plains YMCA,1340 Martine Avenue in Scotch Plains and an additional meeting will be held at the JCC of Central New Jersey, 1391 Martine Ave in Scotch Plains, on Monday, January 28th at 7:30 p.m. You do not need to be a member of either facility to attend the meetings but a photo ID is required at the door at the JCC.

According to Ms. Carow the registration fills very quickly, even in the opening day.

Please email Amy Carow at ASCarow@verizon.net with questions or for more information regarding the Triwomen Group.

Why We Keep Kosher

Why We Keep Kosher

This week's parshah, Shemini, introduces the Torah's dietary laws. Animals must chew their cud and have split hooves to be kosher, fish need fins and scales, and a list of forbidden fowl is enumerated.

To those of us in Jewish education, it is a continuing source of disappointment that so many Jews still believe the kosher laws to be outdated.
