SCOTCH PLAINS, NJ -- Kindergarteners at Congregation Beth Israel in Scotch Plains created and blew their own shofars on the opening day of the synagogue’s Religious School, Sept. 8.

The students learned about this ancient instrument that is sounded during the High Holidays of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, and brought home their own shofars to welcome the Jewish New Year.

The kindergarten class at Congregation Beth Israel meets weekly on Sunday mornings and focuses on the symbols, songs and stories of holidays and Shabbat. Synagogue membership is not required for enrollment in Religious School programs through second grade.
