CLARK, NJ -- The Scotch Plains-Fanwood and Westfield JV boys soccer teams played to a 1-1 tie on Saturday at Arthur L. Johnson High School in Clark, NJ, resulting in the arch rivals being named Union County co-champions.
It was a thrilling comeback on a field that has not always been kind for the Raiders. On Monday, the girls varsity soccer team also tied with Westfield, but lost on penalty kicks after two scoreless overtime periods. Last year, in a boys varsity Union County tournament game, the boys lost on penalty kicks.
On Saturday, Scotch Plains-Fanwood was down, 1-0, with :20 left in second half. The Raiders were awarded a free kick just before the clock ran out. This turn of events allowed Scotch Plains-Fanwood to take the free kick and score.
The goal was scored by junior Roman Perelli with an assist by Rory Moser.
Westfield and Scotch Plains-Fanwood played two scoreless 10:00 overtime periods before they were declared co-champions. (There is no penalty kick round in JV soccer.)
