METUCHEN, NJ -- In the final race of the meet, the 400 Freestyle Relay, Bergen Catholic defeated Saint Joseph (Metuchen), 86-85, in the NJSIAA Tournament Non-Public, Group A Quarterfinals on Tuesday, Feb. 11.
Saint Joseph, which recently won the Greater Middlesex County Tournament for the 42nd consecutive year, soundly defeated No. 7 Delbarton, 115-55 in the first round. At Bergen Catholic, the Falcons had the lead going into the final event, which was won by the Crusader foursome of Ben Rose, Sam Hughes, Alex Rose, and Julian Chun in 3:22.81.
The meet featured some of the top swimmers in the state of New Jersey, including Saint Joseph's Tyler Knurek, the winner in the 100 Freestyle, 100 Backstroke and the lead-off swimmer in the 200 Medley Relay for the Falcons. Marco Niro took the 50 Freestyle and 200 Freestyle and was part of the winning Medley Relay team.
Bergen Catholic's Julian Chun had an equally impressive day. He captured the 200 Freestyle and 200 Breaststroke and anchored the winning 400 Freestyle Relay, which secured the victory for the Crusaders.
