HOLMDEL, NJ --  The Union Catholic girls and boys cross-country teams turned in great performances as several runners produced personal best times on the Holmdel Park course at the State Non-Public A Cross-Country Championships on Saturday.

The UC girls, led by senior Leena Morant's fifth place finish in 19:59, received personal best times from four its five scoring runners and nearly won the team title, placing second to Red Bank Catholic, 46-48.

With its runner-up finish, the UC girls advanced to the Meet of Champions for the sixth straight year. The top two teams in each race automatically qualified for the M of C, which is scheduled for next Saturday at Holmdel Park. The girls race is at 11 a.m. and the boys at 11:45 a.m.

In addition to Morant's fifth place finish, UC also picked up a sixth-place from freshman Kathryn Power in 20:06, an eighth-place finish from Abby Granrath in 20:15, a 14th place finish from Elsa Spoor in 20:48, a 15th place finish from Maameyaa Nyinah in 20:51.    

On the boys side, all six finishers for UC ran personal best times for the Holmdel course as the Vikings placed a very strong sixth in the team standings with 179 points. 

Junior Matt Granizo spearheaded the charge for UC by placing 13th in 16:51. Zach Turner was 26th in 17:32, Sam Hernandez placed 31st in 17:44, Noah Handlin was 41st in 17:54, and Noah Alston finished 70th in 18:36.
