SCOTCH PLAINS/FANWOOD – Upon his hire in mid-July, new Scotch Plains-Fanwood head football coach Austin Holman had little time to construct a coaching staff, but he had a strong idea of whom he wanted on it.

In order to rebuild the program, Holman wanted to bring in all of the school’s best athletes who weren’t currently playing a fall sport. To do this, he constructed his staff so that his assistant coaches were also a coach in many of the other major winter and spring sports.

“The first thing I said was, ‘I want the best in Scotch Plains’. I even told the kids that,” Holman told TAPintoSPF after a practice Tuesday morning. “And now, I think we got the best in the whole school.”

“Maybe I didn’t know every coach by name always, but I had a relationship with pretty much every single one of them,” Holman added about how he built the staff. “The chemistry has been outstanding. In a way, we’ve all gelled in right away. The best thing is, we got guys that care and want to work, so it’s easy to built a relationship with guys like that – and all of these guys are like that.”

With preseason camp underway and just three weeks before Scotch Plains-Fanwood opens its season against Holy Cross of Delran, Holman’s staff is complete. Pete Kane, Kyle Anderson, Dan Doherty, Marc Fabiano, Greg Mobus, Jon Fletcher, Ken Hernandez, and Will Miska make up the staff in charge of rebuilding the Raiders.

TAPintoSPF interviewed and profiled each coach on a staff that brings with it much experience and state championship-level success.

Pete Kane – Defensive Coordinator

  • Task: Run the defense. Move players around and change how SPF runs the defense per the athletic ability of its personnel.

    • Special Teams Coordinator and Head Track and Field Coach at Cranford from 2005 to 2015. Won football state championships in 2011 and 2015 under Cranford head coach Erik Rosenmeier, whom he followed from SPF — where Rosenmeier was an assistant — to Cranford.

    • Ran track at TCNJ.
  • Coach Quote: “There’s a buzz and electricity here. We’ve got kids who haven’t played football in a year or two, maybe not since PAL. They’re back, and their friends are convincing them to come back, play, and help us win some football games. I’m excited for this staff – we have very knowledgeable coaches who have years of experience and have been on staffs that have rebuilt programs and had success, winning several state championships amongst the coaching staff. We have kids that are having fun, and the coaches are having fun, and we’ve got a lot of energy.”

Dan Doherty – Middle Linebackers and Tailbacks Coach

    • Current Assistant Track and Field coach at SPF.
    • Current Math teacher at SPFHS.
  • As a Player:
    • Played outside linebacker and tailback at Johnson (Clark) in mid-1980s.
  • Coach Quote: “There’s a lot of positive energy, and I think this comes from Coach Holman. We’ve got a lot of kids out and good athletes out who haven’t played before, but they’re very athletic and it’s just energetic and positive. We’ll see what it fosters.”

Greg Mobus – Defensive Line Coach, Assistant Offensive Line Coach

    • Played at Watchung Hills.
    • Played collegiately for one season at Moravian College (Pa.).
  • Coach Quote: “We have to improve our attitude, aggression, and physicality a little bit on the line. We have to make sure the kids are playing at a higher level, and that they know what our expectations are. Their expectations follow along with them. Whatever we expect from them doesn’t matter as long as they’re on the same page as us; it doesn’t make a difference.”

Jon Fletcher - Offensive Line Coach, Assistant Defensive Line Coach

They have to get used to me and I have to get used to them. It’s a new system coming from last year, with new language, so they’re just trying to adjust to that, which is a time process. It’s going to take a while. But they’re enthusiastic and listening.”
