SCOTCH PLAINS, NJ -- The Union Catholic girls, led by Madison Johnson's strong all-round game, raced out to a big lead on the way to a 49-24 victory over 14th-seeded Kent Place in the first round of the Union County Tournament on Tuesday afternoon.
Third-seeded Union Catholic, now 17-4 on the season, will play No. 11 Roselle Catholic in the quarterfinal round on Friday at 6:00 p.m. at A.L. Johnson High School in Clark. UC defeated Roselle Catholic, 61-26, on Dec 23.
UC left little doubt about the outcome of its matchup with Kent Place as Johnson scored the first six points of the game and the Vikings jumped out to a 18-5 lead after the first quarter.
Johnson, a junior guard/forward, led all scorers with 16 points. She also grabbed three rebounds, and had three steals and two assists. Sophomore guard Kayla Riley also had a strong game for UC by scoring 11 points.
