SCOTCH PLAINS/FANWOOD, NJ -- Scotch Plains-Fanwood's winning streak extended to five games with a 2-1 overtime thriller against Columbia (Maplewood), one of the teams to defeat the Raiders early in the season before the current roll began.
Erica Schug scored both goals to give Scotch Plains-Fanwood the victory. Schug received a great pass from Haley Cino and scored late in the first half to give the Raiders a 1-0 lead and the confidence boost that the team needed.
"Today’s game was hands down the best we’ve played so far and the most exciting," said girls field hockey coach Allie Neidig. "We had lost to Columbia, 6-1, earlier in our season, so we knew we had a tough game against us."
After letting up the tying goal early in the second half, the Raiders became more aggressive and fired more shots. However, they couldn’t find the back of the net during regulation time.
In the overtime 7v7, Schug came out ready and determined to win.
"We dominated the overtime portion of the game, and Erica’s aggressive plays on offense, speed and endurance helped allowed her to score and beat Columbia 2-1 in overtime," Coach Neidig said.
