SCOTCH PLAINS - The Union Catholic volleyball team, ranked No. 5 in the state, opened its season with a straight sets victory over Scotch Plains on Friday night at Union Catholic.
The Vikings, the defending Union County and NJSIAA Section B Non-Public Champion last year, defeated the Raiders, 25-18, 25-15.
Several players contributed to the victory for Union Catholic.
Alexandra Kwasnik had eight kills, three digs and five service points. Olivia Szyszkiewicz recorded seven service points and fuve digs. Adrienne Caceda had 11 service points and 10 assists. Abbey Ortiz had 11 service points and 10 assists. Grace Kane and Sophia Herrera had five kills. Brianna Lamberty came up with five digs. Najaa Williams had six digs, and A'Liyah Thomas had five service points.
