SCOTCH PLAINS/FANWOOD, NJ  -- In a road game that Scotch Plains-Fanwood trailed 21-20 in the final minute, junior kicker Akin Akinwunmi had yet to attempt a varsity football field goal, and he couldn't have picked a bigger spot to do it.

The Raiders were in a dogfight against Immaculata last Friday and had coughed up a 20-0 lead. It was his opportunity to rise to the occasion when his number was called.

On 4th-and-Goal at the Immaculata six yard line with 25 seconds left, Akinwunmi booted a perfect kick through the uprights for a game-winning 23-yard field goal to give Scotch Plains-Fanwood an exhilarating 23-21 win over the Spartans. It was the Raiders’ first win over the Somerville parochial school in at least over 15 years.

“As soon as it reached the five-minute mark, I knew we would probably kick it,” Akinwunmi told TAPintoSPF.net. “I started stretching out, running, and then we kicked it.”
