SCOTCH PLAINS/FANWOOD, NJ -- While the Scotch Plains-Fanwood girls swim team was unable to repeat as Union County Champions on Sunday, Jan. 26, sprinter Julia Bonhote was a County champion in two individual races (the 50 and 100 Freestyle events). Bonhote, who had the lowest seed time going into the event, swam the 50 Free in 24.21 and the 100 Free in 52.88, more than one second faster than the second place finisher.

Additionally, Bonhote helped the Raiders get the second place in the 200 Freestyle Relay with a blistering 23.72 anchor leg and  led off the second place-finishing 400 Freestyle Relay. For her outstanding performance at the meet, she is this week's Joint Motion Physical Therapy Athlete of the Week.

The sophomore and her teammates had high expectations going into the big meet.

"We knew the competition would be tough this year, and we were focusing on doing our best against Westfield and Summit since those were the two teams that we lost to in the regular season," Bonhote told TAPintoSPF. "We went in with the mindset of giving our best no matter what happened."

"Swimming is sometimes thought of as individual times or races, but high school swimming is really about your team experience," she said. "There's not one performance or swim that doesn't make a difference. Every swim and swimmer counts. Your teammates are always there to support you."

Even with her outstanding performances all season long, Bonhote still looks to get better.

"I want to keep improving as an individual swimmer and help my teammates improve as well. I'd like to see our team have a strong showing and get as far as we can in the state sectionals next month," Bonhote said. "The Scotch Plains-Fanwood swim teams have a history of successful seasons, and I'm really proud to be a part of that and help my team get to where we are."
