SCOTCH PLAINS/FANWOOD, NJ -- This week's Joint Motion Physical Therapy Athlete of the Week award goes to the entire Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School girls gymnastics team, which achieved remarkable success throughout the 2019 Fall Season.

On Friday, Oct. 18, for the first time since 2003, the team earned the Union County Championship with a complete and total team effort, led by Coach Lisa Cerchio and Assistant Coach Tara Bozetarnik.  Additionally, the girls won the Cougar Invitational competition held at Cranford High School on Oct. 3. Among the standout performances that day were:

  • Shaylin Farley, First Place All Around, Bars, and Floor;
  • Elisa Bianco and Tamyra Singletary, who tied for First Place in Vault; and
  • Jordana Reisberg First Place in Beam

“This group is so special because they are such a cohesive unit with tremendous team spirit. They support each other through every challenging step they face as individuals as well as a team,” said Coach Lisa Cerchio. “The team captains are seniors Nicole DeFrancesco, Emily Grill, and Kelly Zimmerman. I have special bond with this team in particular because I have watched some of them progress in this sport since they were in kindergarten and have followed their success in their private gyms.”

The girls have been working hard all season and on most days participating in double practice sessions both at SPFHS and Surgent’s Elite Gymnastics.

“I am grateful for all the support that their club coaches provide all season long and most importantly during our off-season to help prepare them for high school season,” Coach Cerchio added. "This team is just such an amazing group to coach!"

Next up: The North 2 Sectional Tournament will be held Saturday, Nov. 2, beginning at 10:00 at St. Thomas Aquinas (formerly Bishop Ahr) High School. They will learn on Saturday night if they advance to the State Tournament.
