SCOTCH PLAINS/FANWOOD, NJ -- Even though he is only 8 years old, Liam Donovan is the Scotch Plains-Fanwood lacrosse team's biggest fan.
Quarantine rules put the kibosh on what should have been a great birthday celebration for Liam, who has a rare genetic syndrome called Wolf-Hirschhorn Syndrome and other physical challenges.
"Things in Liam's life are a struggle compared to what the typical child experiences, but we take huge pride in all of the little gains and milestones met," his mom, Cheryl, posted on his Liam's Leaps and Bounds Facebook page.
Since they haven't been able to see Liam in person to wish him a Happy Birthday, the lacrosse team did the next best thing: they sent him a video birthday card.
"The seniors and the coaches of Liam's favorite LAX team made him this birthday video and it made me cry. Best present ever," Cheryl said. "It was a very nice surprise. It was so thoughtful of them to do that for Liam. Nothing I could ever buy him would be this meaningful."
"I saw that it was his birthday this past weekend, and I knew he would’ve been in our game on Saturday because it was at Cranford," Coach Nick Miceli said. "So during a Google meet session I had with my seniors I asked if them if they could send a birthday video. Some of our coaches and I put it together and sent it to him to try and make his day special since he can't be there watching us play."
A shout-out to all the Scotch Plains-Fanwood lacrosse team participants: Patrick Mochnal, Ryan Lamberta, Charlie Levine, Justin Fletcher, Will Brady, Nick Belford, Mike DiFrancesco, Aidan Guma, Coach Martinez, Coach Robel, and Coach Miceli.
