SCOTCH PLAINS/FANWOOD, NJ -- The Scotch Plains Fanwood  PAL launched its 2019 season on Sunday, Sept. 15, under the sun and blue skies. Three of the five teams that compete in the New Jersey Suburban Youth Football  League started the season with victories.

At Scotch Plains Fanwood High's Tyson Field, the D team Raiders (5th grade) knocked off Perth Amboy, 14-7, while the E team (4th graders) rolled past Cranford, 38-0. The C team Raiders played in Westfield where Scotch Plains Fanwood posted a 13-6 victory over the Blue Devils in the 6th-grade division.

The A (eighth grade) and B (seventh grade) teams for SPF were defeated by Perth Amboy, 6-2, and 28-0, respectively.

The third graders for the Raiders fell to Sparta in the first game of the day at SPF High's Tyson Field.

Mayor Al Smith of Scotch Plains and Mayor Colleen Mahr of Fanwood and Austin Holman, the head football coach for Scotch Plains Fanwood High School, were all in attendance at opening day in Scotch Plains.

Here are the Players of the Week for the Raiders in each age division.

A TEAM (8th grade)

  • Offensive Player of the Week; Sean Harris
  • Defensive Player of the Week: Michael Eitmanas

B TEAM (seventh grade)

  • Player of the Week: John Boyle 

C TEAM (sixth grade)

  • Offensive Player of the Week: Jake Martucci and Jayvon Young
  • Defensive Player of the Week: Aiden Lickman and Thomas Dowling

D TEAM (fifth grade)

  • Offensive Player of the Week: Chris Horn
  • Defensive Player of the week: Nick Marranca 

E TEAM  (fourth grade)

  • Offensive Player of the Game: Marcus Stromberg
  • Defensive Player of the Game: Henry Jacobsen
