SCOTCH PLAINS/FANWOOD, NJ – As graduation approaches, TAPintoSPF is taking a look at the spring sports seasons that were supposed to take place but never did because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Today we honor the 2020 Softball seniors.
Five student-athletes graduated from the program despite never being able to take the diamond for their final year: Chrissy Gubernat, Kayla Nitti, Kelly Nitti, Cassidy Novello, and Julia Solsky.
Although none of the seniors could compete in their last campaign, all five girls have been letter-winners since their junior seasons.
In addition to softball, Novello and Kelly Nitti have both played field hockey since the program’s inception in 2017, with Novello now continuing her field hockey career at Wellesley College.
All five were consistent contributors in their time with the Raiders, and head coach Jess Hulnik reflected on each’s presence within the unit:
Chrissy Gubernat - Chrissy has great hands, quick feet, and a lot of hustle. She is never afraid to try new things and is one of the most coachable players we have ever worked with.
Kayla Nitti - A solid all-round player who always was looking to fine tune her skills and improve. Kayla brought a lot of energy and spirit to the team.
Kelly Nitti - A strong varsity outfielder with a good bat, Kelly always brought a positive attitude and strong work ethic to practices. She was on track to having a great season this year.
Cassidy Novello - Our field general behind the dish, Cassidy called a great game and had a great rapport and demeanor with our pitching staff. They loved throwing to her.
Julia Solsky - A solid middle infielder with great knowledge of the game and strong leadership skills, Julia is a dedicated player who did an awesome job mentoring our younger players.
