The Fanwood Scotch Plains YMCA (FSPY) Girls “Black” team started off the dual meet season at the Bridgewater YMCA on Saturday, Oct. 12, against the Somerset Valley YMCA (SVY) Girls A Division. The girls swam hard, cheered each other on, and after a close meet, narrowly lost to SVY with a score of SVY 178 - FSPY 170.
The individual medleys started with a 1st place finish in the 9-10 100 IM by Janice Yip, followed by Amy Jiang (3rd) and Tessa DeGennaro (4th). Elle Cadigan, Phoebe Kaplan and Ying Chow (2nd, 3rd, and 5th place, respectively) represented the 11-12 age group for 100 IM. In the 13-14 200 IM, Billie Sherratt came in 2nd, followed by Molly Brennan in 5th. Nicole Ben-David (4th) and Abby DiGiorgio (5th) wrapped up the medleys with the 200 IM in the 15 -18 age group.
The youngest group of the FSPY girls, 8/under, was led by a 1st place finish in the 25- meter Free by Camille Keeler, with Sage-Alyssa Isleta close behind in 5th place. Sophie Isleta (2nd) and Vivian Yu (3rd) earned points for the 9-10 girls, and Laura Kim (2nd), Gina Yip (3rd) and Kayla Kerr (5th) for the 11-12 age group in the 50-meter Free. Point scorers for the senior girls in the 100 Free included 13-14 year olds Brooke Labarge (2nd), Bridget Davis (3rd), and Meghan Lai (5th), as well as 15 - 18 year olds Julia Bonhote (3rd) and Chloe Howell (4th).
FSPY had many first-place finishes including Sophie Isleta (9-10), and Elle Cadigan (11-12) in the 50-meter Breast, and Victoria Gee (13-14) and Abby DiGiorgio (15-18) in the 200-meter Breast. In the 8/under 25 Breast, Sally Lin placed 2nd, while Emma Begarney came in 5th. Others earning FSPY points were 9-10 girls Tessa DeGennaro (2nd) and Ella Lin (3rd), 11-12 girls Gina Yip and Ying Chow (2nd and 3rd), and Abigail Ryan and Bree Dy (4th and 5th) for the 15-18 year olds.
8/under Sage-Alyssa Isleta started off the Backstroke events by taking 1st place in the 25 Back, followed by Emma Begarney and Ivy Zhang (4th and 5th). Vivian Yu and Amy Jiang took 2nd and 3rd place in the 50 back for the 9-10 girls, while Laura Kim and Madelyn Lee led the 11-12’s with a 1st and 2nd place finish. Billie Sherratt led the FSPY 13-14 group with a 2nd place finish in the 100 Back, followed by Bridget Davis (5th). 15-18 year old Lily Hughes came in 2nd in the 200 back, with Anushree Ghate 4th.
Camille Keeler started off this event in the 8/under 25 Fly by coming in 2nd and Sally Lin in 5th. Janice Yip flew into 1st place for the 9-10 group in the 50 Fly, and Ella Lin followed in 3rd. FSPY continued to earn points in the Butterfly events with Phoebe Kaplan (2nd), Madelyn Lee (3rd), and Kayla Kerr (5th) in the 11-12 50 Fly, and Molly Brennan (3rd), and Katherine Li (5th) in the 13-14 100 Fly. Individual events wrapped up with 15-18’s Nicole Ben-David coming in 2nd, Michelle Kong in 3rd, and Natalie Lee in 4th.
The relays brought the spectators to their feet as they cheered on these close races. First places went to the 9-10 relay team of J. Yip, Sophie Isleta, Jiang and Yu and the 11-12 relay team of Kim, Kaplan, G. Yip, and Cadigan in the 200 free relays. The 8U 100-meter free relay team (Begarney, Sage Isleta, S. Lin and Keeler) placed second. Third place finishes earned points in the 200 free relay for the 11-12’s (Chow, Kerr, Lee and Yu), 13-14’s (Brennan, Sherratt, Lai and Davis) and 15-18’s (Howell, Hughes, Bonhote, and Ben-David).
The girls are off to a great start to the 2019-2020 season and we look forward to seeing more victorious swims from FSPY at their upcoming dual and invitational swim meets.
