SEWELL, NJ -- Saint Joseph High School (Metuchen) took two Top 10 placements in the Finals of the NJSIAA Meet of Champions at Gloucester County Institute of Technology on Sunday, March 1. 

Sophomore Darien Betances finished 10th in the Boys 50 Yard Freestyle with a time of 21.65. Jack Alexy of Delbarton set a new Meet of Champions record by swimming the 50 Free in 20.08. 

The Falcons finished the Boys 400 Yard Freestyle Relay in 3:13.93, good for 10th place in a very fast field. Will Barnett, a junior from Fanwood, led off and finished his 100 in 49.26. Senior CJ Talerico swam his leg in 49.60, Darien Betances completed the third 100 in 48.11, and sophomore Tyler Knurek anchored the race and posted a 46.96.

Other Falcons swimmers who competed in the Meet of Champions were Dan BadawayBen Lockey, Marco Niro, and Richard Park, who all competed in the 100 Freestyle.

It was a fine ending for Saint Joseph (Metuchen), which won its 42nd consecutive Middlesex County Championship on Feb. 3, 2020. The team's season ended with a one-point loss to Bergen Catholic, 86-85, on Feb. 11 in the NJSIAA Non-Public, Group A Tournament quarterfinal round.
