UNION, NJ -- Union Catholic rallied to win the first set and never trailed in the second set as the Vikings, ranked No. 2 in the state, overpowered No. 12 Westfield in a battle of state powerhouses to win the Union County Championship for the second straight year on Saturday night at Kean University.

It was the sixth straight year that UC and Westfield clashed in the county final, and Union Catholic has now won four of those six matchups.

Westfield was leading the first set,19-16, but the Vikings took the lead for good at 20-19 and went on a 9-3 run to win the first set, 25-22.

Union Catholic, which improved to 25-1 on the season, rode that momentum into the second set and imposed its will from the start on the way to a 25-16 victory to secure its fourth county title in the past five years.
The victory was the 14th straight for UC and the third in three matches with Westfield this season. The only loss suffered by UC came against No. 1 ranked and defending Tournament of Champions winner Immaculate Heart Academy.

It's been a memorable season for UC and coach Nancy Saggio, who has now captured 13 county titles and reached 500 victories in her career at UC earlier this season.

Several UC players had standout performances in the victory over Westfield.  

Olivia Szyszkiewicz had nine digs, seven kills, and seven service points. Brianna Lamberty recorded 15 service points and six digs. Alexandra Kwasnik finished with eight kills and six service points. Abbey Ortiz recorded nine asists and four service points. Najlaa Williams finished 17 digs, Adrienne Caceda had seven assists, and  Aliyah Thomas came up with six service points.
