SCOTCH PLAINS/FANWOOD, NJ -- Expectations were modest for Raider wrestlers in their home debut vs. Westfield on Monday at Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School, but during the early part of the match, SPF had the advantage, Noah Samms brought energy in to the first match of the evening and got the crowd excited with a win.
Anthony Robinson pinned Daniel Moriaru in the second match of the evening, which gave the Raiders more hope for an upset, but Westfield bounced back with wins in the next two matches, including James McDermott's 13-12 decision over Robert Mehorter in the most exciting contest of the evening. The Raiders benefited from pins by Larry Shoyoye over Jack Price and Robert Lerner over Jonathan Heard
In the end, however, Westfield proved too tough in this match.
"Noah Samms, Robert Lerner and Larry Shoyoye continue to step up to every challenge and wrestle tough against talented kids," said Scotch Plains-Fanwood wrestling coach Marc Fabiano after the match. "I expect Westfield will do well in sectionals."
"Tonight we wrestled the best we have since the start of the season. Westfield is a very good and skilled team, and we scored 25 points against them. We showed ourselves how tough we are. I could not be more proud of these kids and their belief in themselves tonight," Fabiano added.
The Raiders hit the mats again next in Cranford on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.
