RAHWAY, NJ — The Rahway Police Department announced Saturday that the body of Brian Gooney, 55, has been found, nearly a month after his disappearance on March 9.

Detective Anthony Tilton positively identified the body, discovered along the banks of the Rahway River near Essex Street, as Gooney.

Over the past three-and-a-half weeks, both the Rahway Police Department and the Union County Police Department had conducted a number of searches of the Rahway River and surrounding areas.

An autopsy will now be conducted by the Union County Medical Examiner's Office to determine the cause of death, police said.

Gooney was last seen leaving his Rahway apartment on Tuesday, March 9, at about 9 p.m., captured on a surveillance camera. No one had seen or heard from him since.

His disappearance gripped not only the residents of Rahway but also the city of Linden where he was employed in the public schools as a paraprofessional. The Linden Public Schools community organized a brief gathering called "Bring Brian Home" on March 19 at its athletic complex, Cooper Field, in order to raise awareness of Gooney's disappearance and encourage those with information to come forward.

The Rahway Police Department wished to remind the public that this remains an active investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Anthony Tilton at 732-827-2146 or the Rahway Police Department TIPS Line at 732-388-1553.
