Union County College’s Women’s Basketball Team Ends Season Ranked 7th in the Nation

CRANFORD, NJ - The Union County College Women’s Basketball Team won the National Junior College Athletic Association Division II Region XIX Championship and the NJCAA District N Championship on March 5 when they defeated Harcum College. This led the Lady Owls to the national tournament that was held in Harrison, Arkansas from March 18-24. After four tough games against community colleges from around the nation, the Lady Owls ended their season ranked seventh nationally.

In the first game of the tournament, the 13th seed Lady Owls competed against the fourth seed Owens College. Owens defeated Union by a score of 82 - 64.

The Lady Owls continued to compete and won the next three games in the tournament. In their second game, they defeated Cecil College from North East, Maryland by a score of 93 - 80 in overtime. In their third game, the Lady Owls defeated Ancilla College from Plymouth, Indiana by a score of 61 - 47. This win advanced the Lady Owls to play in the championship game for seventh place. In their fourth and final game, the team faced Macomb Community College, a tough team from Warren, Michigan. The Lady Owls won by a score of 71 - 50.

Lady Owl Yamel Abreu was named to the NJCAA Division II National Tournament All-Tournament Team. Ms. Abreu was one of only ten players of the tournament chosen to be a member of the All-Tournament Team.

Coach Marbely Montas was also recognized by the NJCAA. This was her first year as head coach and she was named the Region XIX Division II Coach of the Year.

“I am very proud of all that the Lady Owls and Coach Montas achieved this year. Their hard work from week to week paid off when they were able to compete at the national level,” stated Union’s Dean of College Life Tammy Smith.
