MAPLEWOOD, NJ - Hundreds came out on Memorial Day to enjoy the excitement and spectacle of rubber ducks wobbling down the Rahway River at the 20th Annual Duck Race, which is sponsored and run by the South Mountain YMCA.

The duck race “started” when Mayor for the Day, Tyler Baptiste, dropped the Golden Duck into the river. Mayor for the Day is an annual event run by the Maplewood Rotary Club.

Each of the ducks are numbered, with tickets sold for specific ducks. There were six heats in all, and over 600 ducks vying for the top spots. The first 13 ducks to cross the finish line in each race were winners, with ticket-holders receiving prizes that included Yankee tickets, a 2 night stay at Great Wolf Lodge, a Turtle Back Zoo membership, Mets tickets and a variety of gift certificates to local businesses and restaurants.

All proceeds from the Duck Race go to financial assistance, summer camp scholarships and youth development programs at the South Mountain YMCA.

James Goodger, Executive Director of the South Mountain YMCA said, “this year was just perfect. No rain, warm, but not too hot, and everyone seemed to be having lots of fun."
