MAPLEWOOD, NJ - Carl Patterson is a local Maplewood photographer with a diverse portfolio specializing in events and news coverage.
Originally born in Virginia, Patterson made the move to New York when he was 3 years old. Throughout his adult life, he worked as a correctional officer at both Rikers and Tombs Municipal Jails in New York, serving as part of New York’s Boldest.
Paterson is largely self-educated in photography, and said he learned the majority of his skills through practice and determination.
“There’s a lot to learn, in terms of settings and how to shoot manually,” said Patterson. “Thankfully I’ve always loved taking pictures.”
Among his portfolio samples, Patterson has photographed figures such as Supreme Court Justice Sonya Sotomayor, as well as President Barrack Obama’s commencement address at Rutgers University.
CP Photo Op also photographs commissioned parties and events, in addition to local properties for real estate companies. On the topic of working in Maplewood, Patterson said it is a mutually beneficial relationship.
“I love Maplewood for the quiet lifestyle and the diversity,” said Patterson. “Photography is not something I do just to make money. I give and work in order to see that same kindness in return.”
