MAPLEWOOD, NJ – According to information supplied by Police Chief Jim DeVaul, and reported earlier by BNN, at approximately 3:13 a.m. on August 19, the Maplewood Police Department received a frantic 911 call from a female who reported that intruders had gained entrance to her home at 7 Lombardy Place and assaulted her fiancé. She further stated that two males wearing masks, dressed in black and armed with handguns threatened both her and her fiancé and demanded money.

According to sources, the male victim confronted the two intruders and engaged in a violent struggle. The male victim was able to wrest one of the handguns and reportedly shot off one round at the two suspects who then fled out the rear door of the residence.  The two intruders took off on foot through the rear of the property and ran through yards off Burnett Avenue.  At this time it is unknown if the suspects were shot, and all area hospitals have been put on alert.

A vehicle, which the police believe to have been driven by the suspects, was located in a nearby parking lot bearing fictitious New Jersey license plates. This vehicle was towed back to the MPD for further investigation.

Maplewood officers put out a request for K-9 assistance and the Union Police and Union County Sheriff Department K-9 responded to the scene and assisted in the search for the suspects in the surrounding area.

It is undetermined as of now whether anything was taken from the residence. The male victim was evaluated by EMS at the scene; however, he refused any further medical attention. MPD Detectives responded to the scene and the investigation is ongoing. Officers are continuing to canvas the area for witnesses, locate any potential video and search for additional evidence. Chief Jim DeVaul stated, “the incident appears to have been targeted toward the resident at the address and there is no reason to believe that the public is in any further danger.”
