ESSEX COUNTY — Benjamin Avrut, who has been held at the Essex County Correctional Facility in Newark since his arrest for the Jan. 4 homicide of his mother, Gwen Avrut, has been denied bail. The decision came at his Feb. 9 detention hearing.

The Maplewood resident, 35, will remain in the facility until his trial; a start date has not been confirmed by TAPinto SOMA.

Mother and son had lived in separate apartments at The Top building on South Orange Avenue.
