BELLEVILLE, NJ - The Millburn baseball team had a tougher time with Columbia in their third meeting of the season, but came away with a 5-4 victory Monday night in the semifinal round of the Greater Newark Tournament.
The top-seeded Millers advance to the GNT championship game, where they will play second-seeded Seton Hall Prep Saturday afternoon in Belleville. Before that, Millburn will host Seton Hall Prep in a regular-season conference game on Wednesday.
Richie Schiekofer went 3-for-4 with an RBI and three stolen bases and winning pitcher Connor Lally was 2-for-2 for Millburn (19-2), which scored single runs in the second, third and fourth innings and two in the fifth.
Lally pitched the first five innings, yielding three hits and three walks and allowing three runs. Lally, who struck out four, took a shutout into the sixth inning, which is when Columbia (9-9) scored all its runs. Millburn had defeated Columbia, by 9-0 scores in each of their two regular-season meetings. The Millers and Cougars will face each other for a fourth time in the opening round of the NJSIAA Section 2, Group 4 state tournament next Monday.
Mike Kologlu pitched 1 1/3 innings of scoreless ball, allowing one hit, to pick up the save.
