WEST ORANGE, NJ — Owen Murphy pitched six innings of one-hit ball and the West Orange baseball team posted a 4-1 victory over Columbia High School on opening day Monday.
Murphy struck out eight, walked five batters and gave up one run before Matthew Bove came on to pitch a scoreless seventh inning for the save. Bove struck out one and allowed one hit.
Noah Stennett went 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBI as the Mountaineers took a 3-0 lead in the first inning. Melachi Jones singled in the other run in the third inning for West Orange.
Matt Motiwalla singled in the only run in the fifth inning for Columbia. Cougar pitchers Nick Williams and Jared Dussman combined to allow five hits in the loss.
