BLOOMFIELD, NJ -  Have you noticed the additional method of police patrol in the Township of Bloomfield; it’s the Sentinel Police Mobility Vehicle (PMV) which is being utilized by the Bloomfield Police Department.

The three-wheel vehicle is an environmentally-safe, electrically powered law enforcement vehicle according to Lt. Gary Peters of the Bloomfield Police.

The Sentinel PMV is designed to supplement bicycle and foot patrols in Bloomfield, as a reliable state-of-the-art, highly visible and efficient vehicle.

“The vehicle is equipped with emergency lights and has an audible siren. The PMV is designed to carry a single officer and is deployed regularly in our downtown area. In addition, the vehicle is used at special events such as parades, sporting events, road races, carnivals and school gatherings,” Peters said.

The PMV design and the size of the vehicle allows police officers to patrol on sidewalks safely, as well as go through open doorways and climb 4” to 6” curbs when in pursuit or rushing to an emergency.

“The vehicle has been a great asset to our department and is currently assigned to our community policing unit. We have received positive feedback from members of the community, who report they enjoy seeing the officer traveling through our downtown district” Peters said.

In addition to its multi-terrain design, the Sentinel allows for sufficient storage space to provide an officer the ability to carry emergency supplies, which are otherwise impractical to carry on a bicycle or on foot.

The electric propulsion and energy management system will allow an officer to patrol as much as 80 miles per charge.  With the internal charging system, the Sentinel can be recharged at any 110/220 volt outlet.

At a cost of less than 1 cent per mile, the Sentinel vehicle is a cost effective and reliable alternative to traditional fuel-powered, security vehicles according to Peters.

The maximum speed of the PMV is 29 MPH, and it has a three speed governor system that can travel at a distance of 80 miles at an average of 6 to 8 miles per hour.

“Aside from the many operational benefits, the PMV offers increased visibility for the police officer resulting from an elevated riding platform.” Peters said.

Police Director, Samuel DeMaio made the following statement, “Myself and the men and women of the Bloomfield Police Department are committed to providing the Township’s residents and visitors with the best quality of life we can deliver. I will continue to explore and utilize all tools that become available to meet this end”.

The PMV has the following characteristics: the weight is 375 pounds; the max load is 350 pounds; max incline gradient is 6 percent; vehicle length is 5’ feet and width is 32” inches and charge time is 2 to 3 hours and charge voltage is 110 volts.  The battery cell is Lithium Ion Iron Phosphate. Additionally, the vehicle has rear disc hydraulic brakes which allow quick control.
