Brendan P. Tevlin Memorial Field Debuted at Seton Hall Prep Lacrosse Opener

WEST ORANGE, NJ — Seton Hall Prep (SHP) seniors and cousins Brian Tevlin and Thomas Magnier stood among their peers on the lacrosse team as the field was officially christened the “Brendan P. Tevlin Memorial Field” on Wednesday prior to the season opener.

Despite falling 8-6 to Summit, Brian, the younger brother of the 2013 SHP graduate and Livingston resident who was fatally shot in June 2014, scored a goal and also had an assist during the game, which was played in honor of both his brother and SHP graduate Billy Zimmerman, who died in a car accident in 2013. The field’s scoreboard was dedicated to Zimmerman. (See video below.)

The restoration and dedication of the Brendan P. Tevlin Memorial Field has been in the works for nearly three years and finally came to fruition this season thanks to the fundraising efforts of friends, family and many local organizations through popular fundraising events like the “Concert for Brendan,” “Bar Night for Brendan,” the “Brendan Tevlin Lacrosse Festival” and more.

According to the organizers, many of these events will continue annually in order to keep Brendan’s spirit alive. SHP Class of 2013 graduates Rich Shahpazian (New Prodvidence) and David King (West Orange), co-founders of the lacrosse festival, said it was “really nice to see everyone's hard work become a reality with the construction of the new field.”

“It is really amazing that three years ago when we started the BPT lacrosse festival, we didn't know how much support we would receive, but hundreds of people helped us and hundreds of people attended and donated thousands,” said Shahpazian. “It really goes to show the type of person Brendan was and how he touched everyone in life. We all need to keep living by his motto: good vibes and easy living.”

Michael Condon, a West Caldwell resident and SHP graduate who also helps organize the annual event, said the lacrosse festival started as a simple way to remember Brendan through something he loved to do. He said he never imagined that three years later, a 4th Annual Brendan Tevlin Lacrosse Festival would be in the works and would be hosted on the Brendan P. Tevlin Memorial Field.

“The support we've received from everyone to make the festival such a success is amazing,” he said. “We are very excited for our plans for the future of the lacrosse festival.”

The 4th Annual Brendan Tevlin Lacrosse Festival is currently scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 5, at 11 a.m. It will be the first lacrosse festival to be played on the Brendan Tevlin Memorial Field with funds benefiting the Brendan Tevlin Memorial Fund.

"Every year we look to make this an event for families from all around the community and outside to come together and celebrate a great day,” said King. “The support we have received over the past three years has been tremendous, and we continuously look to improve the festival and make it better and better each year."
