MAPLEWOOD, NJ — Columbia Cougars head football coach Gary Mobley has been named New Jersey’s High School Football Coach of the Week by the New York Jets.
The accolade comes after Mobley led the Cougars to an underdog victory against the rival Millburn Millers on October 10. Though Millburn was favored to win the game, Columbia steamrolled the Millers to a 28-13 victory.
“It’s good to bring something home and bring some light to Columbia,” Mobley told TAPinto SOMA.“I thank the kids, I thank the administration for believing in me and giving us a chance to get it right. It's a program honor, it's not about me,” he went on to say. “It's about these kids and what they do, how they contribute, and what they sacrifice each and every day.”
The Cougars football program will receive a $2,000 monetary award, as well as an invitation for the team to compete at a tournament hosted by the New York Jets. The players and coaches will also have the opportunity to watch the Jets play from a luxury suite at MetLife Stadium when fans are allowed to attend games, and Columbia’s coaching staff will also be invited to the Jets training facility in Florham Park to watch a team practice.
Mobley, a physical education teacher at Columbia, has been the Cougars head coach since 2016. Following four consecutive losing seasons, under Mobley’s leadership the program has taken a tremendous turn to success. After putting up quality numbers last year, his Cougars are now 3-0 to start the 2020 season.
“We're doing some good things, we believe in each other, the culture is changing, and we're ecstatic about everything right now,” Mobley concluded.
Eli Fishman is a senior at Columbia High School.
