MAPLEWOOD, NJ - A Columbia High School (CHS) student, age 16, reported being assaulted by two other CHS students in front of the school on Wednesday, Jan. 18, according to a statement issued today from the Maplewood Police Department.

The female victim was assaulted by two other juveniles on the sidewalk near the intersection of Valley St. and Parker Ave. according to the police statement, which also included that "multiple on-lookers observed the assault."

A 15-year-old female and a 16-year-old male were each charged with simple assault, charges which the police state were "based upon the evidence developed through investigation thus far and after consultation with the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office. Based upon the evidence available at the present time, the incident is not classified as a Bias Crime."

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information about the incident is requested to contact the Maplewood Police Department Youth Aid Bureau.
