CEDAR GROVE, NJ – The Essex Sheriff's Department has confirmed that a 49-year old man was killed when he lost control of his mountain bike and fell approximately 20 feet off of a rocky ledge in Mills Reservation on the Cedar Grove/Montclair border. The body was recovered at approximately 11:25 a.m. on Monday.
The victim was a resident of Wayne and had been riding with his brother when he fell around 9 a.m. The brother notified law enforcement and remained on the scene.
“The incident happened at 9 a.m. today,” Sheriff Armando Fontoura noted. “The body was recovered by the Newark Fire Division and their EMS Unit. While an investigation into the incident is on-going it appears to have been an accident and no foul play is suspected at this time.”
The identity of the victim is being withheld pending notification of other family members.
Mills Reservation is an Essex County park, consisting of 157.15 acres, in Cedar Grove and Montclair with walking and jogging trails.
