MAPLEWOOD, NJ - Maplewood police responded to a report of a woman being assaulted in the area of Walton Road and Jefferson Avenue shortly after 6:00 am and found her lying on the street. According to a press release from Acting Essex County Prosecutor Theodore N. Stephens, II and Maplewood Police Chief Jim Duval. The woman was transported from the scene to Beth Israel Medical Center and was pronounced dead at 7:17 am.The release went on to say that during the time Maplewood police were searching the area of the first incident, they located an unresponsive male inside a home in the 400 block of Walton Road, and the male was pronounced dead at the scene.
Chief Assistant Prosecutor Thomas Fennelly stated that the identity of the victim is is being withheld pending notification of next of kin. Fennelly also said the cause of death for both victims is pending determination by the autopsies conducted at the Regional Medical Examiner's Office in Newark, NJ.
Both the Maplewood Police Department and the Prosecutor's Homicide Task Force are conducting the investigation which is active and ongoing.
