MAPLEWOOD, NJ - For the second year, the Maplewood Recreation Department is ending the pool season with a free "Dog Days of Summer" event for the town's canine residents.

This Saturday, Sept. 8, the dogs of Maplewood are invited to swim in the pool from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Event organizers noted that "this event is for dogs to swim, not humans," and that "dogs must be on leash from the parking lot to the pool area and must be licensed and wearing their tags." Organizers also asked all participants to "keep in mind dogs should be friendly and socialize well with others."

Attendees can bring balls or Frisbees, but are asked by organizers to be sure they are toys the dog will not mind sharing.

Melissa Mancuso, Maplewood's Director of Recreation and Cultural Affairs, said she came-up with the idea after learning of similar events at other towns, and thinking it was a perfect fit for the dog-friendly town of Maplewood. Mancuso said she was happy to see so many pets and their owners enjoying the first year of the event last summer.

Maplewood Mayor Vic De Luca agreed with Mancuso that the inaugural event was a success adding, "letting residents bring their pets to the pool is a great way to wrap-up the pool season."
