NEWARK NJ - Essex County Democrats today, Oct. 7, endorsed Phil Murphy for Governor of New Jersey. Among the local leaders present for the endorsement announcement were Bloomfield Mayor Michael Venezia, Councilman Carlos Pomares, and Councilman Nicholas Joanow.
Venezia stated “Today I am proud to join our Essex County Democratic Chairman Leroy Jones and County Executive Joe DiVincenzo as well as Democratic leaders from across the state in endorsing Phil Murphy for Governor. I have gotten to know Phil and his team over the last year, and I am incredibly excited to see the kind of positive changes he will make in our state by finally supporting a true middle class agenda."
The endorsement was led by Essex County Democratic Chairman LeRoyJones.Also in attendance were Congressman Donald Payne Jr., Newark Mayor Ras Baraka and Essex County Executive Joseph "Joe D" DiVincenzo.
Essex County Freeholder Cynthia Toro said "the next governor must restore New Jersey's economy by strengthening the middle class while uplifting the urban communities. I am confident that Phil Murphy will prevail and be a governor of the people and for the people."
Murphy hails from Monmouth county and grew up in a family that he described as "middle class on a good day." After putting himself through Harvard University, and later the Wharton School of Business, never one to forget his roots, Murphy spends countless hours working with organizations that help those in most need including troubled teens and victims of domestic abuse. Murphy has also served on the board of the NAACP.
The event took place in front of the historic courthouse in Newark NJ.
