MAPLEWOOD, NJ - The Essex County Prosecutor's Office has released a statement about the dead man found in Maplewood early this morning, which was initially reported as a fatal hit and run accident. The release from acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray and Maplewood Police Chief Robert Cimino states that the cause of death is unknown, and currently under investigation.
The release also states that shortly before 4 a.m., "Maplewood police officers were dispatched to the intersection of Wyoming Ave. and Hickory Dr. on a report of a person lying in the street."
When units arrived, they observed an "unresponsive male on Wyoming Avenue," according to the release. The man was pronounced dead at the scene at 4:10 a.m., stated Chief Assistant Prosecutor Thomas S. Fennelly of the Prosecutor's Homicide Unit.
The release also states that the deceased man has not been identified.
This matter is being investigated by the Essex County Prosecutor's Office Major Crimes Unit and by the Maplewood Police Department, according to Fennelly, who added that the cause and manner of death will be determined by an autopsy at the Regional Medical Examiner's Office.
