SOUTH ORANGE AND MAPLEWOOD, NJ - Leaf collection has been underway in South Orange and Maplewood since October, with leaf collection ending on December 6 in South Orange, and with leaves needing to be out for collection by December 4 or December 11 depending on location in Maplewood, and by December 26 on Essex County roads.

Below are guidelines and schedules for leaf removal in South Orange, Maplewood, and Essex County roads.

From the Village of South Orange website:

Leaf Season will begin on Monday, October 23 and go through December 6.

Leaves are only to be placed curbside when your street falls under an open zone on the leaf map which is available on the Public Works web page. Please review the Seasonal Information tab on the top left margin of the Public Works page for all policies with regards to leaf pickup.

If you are on a county road you must contact the county for their procedures and schedule. (973) 239-3366.


From the Maplewood Township website:

The Department of Public Works will not collect any leaves after the last scheduled date of collection. After this date, residents are solely responsible for the disposal of their leaves. Disposal of leaves is permitted at the Public Works yard for the duration of one week after the last scheduled collection has taken place; after this period, no leaves will be accepted at the Public Works facility.

No leaves shall be put in the street more than 7 days prior to your scheduled week. No leaves shall be put in the street after the Sunday of your final collection week. No plastic bags or branches may be mixed with the leaves. Leaves will not be collected if there is evidence of plastic bags, branches, or other waste items.

Essex County roads in South Orange and Maplewood are scheduled for leaf collection from 
October 30 to November 3, November 27 to December 1, and December 26 to December 29. Leaves can be placed in either biodegradable bags or swept to the curb. More details here.
