EAST ORANGE, NJ — Calling all firefighters to participate in the “Battle of the Bravest,” a firefighter muster and skill competition.

The Battle will be interactive for the public in addition for the firefighters to enjoy. Hosted by NJ First Responders, FirstNet, and the Firefighters Wear Pink Campaign, the event will occur at Soverel Park in East Orange on Saturday, August 28, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Firefighters Wear Pink (FFWP) began approximately four years ago to raise awareness about breast cancer. The founder, Greg Pierre, is a Newark Fireman himself and the owner of FiremanTShirt.com. Pierre said the Battle of the Bravest is “a free event for the public and will entertain, engage, and educate our local community about the things our first responders really do.”

The Battle is an expansion of the Annual Newark Fire Muster. Greg's hope is for the community to “leave with a closer connection to our first responders, along with a heightened sense of what first responders do when responding to very communities we serve.”

The event will also raise community awareness by offering tips about “pre-emergency planning” so the community will gain “a better idea about how to assist during times of crisis.”

Greg Pierre is a Newark Fireman from Engine 26, Tour 1. Pierre became a firefighter after being inspired by the men in his family. “I come from a long list of Haitian American firefighters in my family,” said Pierre. “My father, retired Captain Yves Gregory Pierre, is the true reason I am a firefighter today. My Uncles Moise and Jean Pierre, and my first cousin Vladimir Jacob all made the sacrifice before me. I am the youngest firefighter in my family. It is a very honorable feeling to serve the very community I was born and raised in.”
