BLOOMFIELD, NJ - The Office of Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray confirmed that a suspect wanted for the murder of his nephew in Newark killed himself as authorities attempted to arrest him. The incident took place on Andrew Court in Bloomfield Friday afternoon.
The body of Najee Broadway was found on Marie Place in Newark on May 4. He was 18 years old.
The Essex County Major Crimes Task Force conducted an investigation into the case which led to charges being filed against Omar Broadway, 35 and Kenneth Durant, 36. Both are from Newark. The older Broadway is the uncle of the victim.
Agents assigned to the FBI Fugitive Task Force and Detectives from the Essex County Prosecutor's Office obtained information that the older Broadway was living on Andrew Court in Bloomfield. When authorities surrounded the building, Broadway shot himself. He was found in the basement at which time officers attempted to render first aid. Broadway was pronounced dead at 1:45 p.m. on the scene.
Chief Assistant Prosecutor Thomas S. Fennelly reported that a handgun was found next to Broadway’s body. Broadway’s body was taken to the NJ Northern Regional Medical Examiner’s Office where an autopsy will be performed.
The other suspect in the case, Durant, remains at large. Fennely asked that anyone with information on the whereabouts of Durant is asked to call the Prosecutor’s Tips Line at (877) 847-7432.
