SOUTH ORANGE, NJ - The inaugural South Orange Invitational was held on September 18 at the East Orange Golf Club in Short Hills, raising money for YouthNet, a nonprofit organization that runs after school enrichment programs at South Orange Middle School, Maplewood Middle School, and Columbia High School. Most YouthNet activities are offered at little or no cost to students.
According to event organizers, "the South Orange Invitational was initiated to provide a fun day of friends, golf and dinner while raising money for nonprofit organizations serving the local community." Organizers added that they hope it will become an annual event.
The initial fundraising goal of $10,000 was surpassed, with the event raising about $30,000 from the golf tournament, dinner, raffle and silent auction.
The South Orange Invitational, which was founded by South Orange Village President Sheena Collum and South Orange Village Trustee Deborah Davis Ford, was hosted by three "fierce females" in addition to Collum and Davis Ford: South Orange Trustee Karen Hilton, New Jersey State Assemblywoman Mila Jasey, and Essex County Freeholder President Britnee Timberlake. The event also had a 24 person steering committee.
"Good day, good food, good weather, great people, great cause. When everyone does a little, together - we can do a lot! Special thank you to those who joined us on the host/steering committee." shared Collum on her Facebook page after the event.
