Joan Osborne Sings the Songs of Bob Dylan at SOPAC May 19 at 8 p.m.

Joan Osborne, a multi-platinum, Grammy Award-nominated singer-songwriter will take the stage at the South Orange Performing Arts Center on May 19 at 8 p.m. to pay tribute to music legend and Pulitzer Prize-winner Bob Dylan.  When asked about the challenges of interpreting the iconic songs of Bob Dylan she said, “It’s kind of like being an actor doing Shakespeare. There’s a deep well.”

With a rich background in Rock, Country Rock, Folk, and R&B, Joan Osborne has created a music presence that is commanding, passionate, and emotionally evocative. Citing legendary artists such as Etta James and Ray Charles as influences, Osborne has created a distinctive musical identity and released several acclaimed albums. A jack-of-all trades she continues to tour extensively in various configurations – with her own band, as Joan Osborne’s Soul Revue, and as an acoustic duo and trio.

A Kentucky native, Joan Osborne grew up with a passion for music that eventually led her to New York in the 1980s. Originally there to attend the prestigious New York University film school, it was not long before the pulsing music scene drew her in. By 1992 she founded her own indie label, Womanly Hips, and released the live album Soul Show: Live at Delta 88 and the studio EP Blue Million Miles. By 1995 she was signed to a major label and released her multi-platinum breakthrough album Relish, which included number one single “One of Us."

She was in and out of the studio for the next decade, releasing 7 albums that embodied her creative spirit. Her success made her a sought-after collaborator and she soon found herself working with artists on tour and in the studio. She has shared the stage with Bob Dylan, Stevie Wonder, Patti Smith, Melissa Etheridge and many other acclaimed artists. She worked with the Grateful Dead on their regroup tour in 2003, sang with Motown’s legendary Funk Brothers in the highly acclaimed 2002 documentary Standing in the Shadows of Motown, and produced two albums for legendary blues trio the Holmes Brothers.

Joan Osborne will bring her exploration of the musical poetry of Bob Dylan to the South Orange Performing Arts Center on May 19 at 8 p.m. Tickets are $35-$48 on go on sale March 17 at noon. They can be purchased at www.Sopacnow.org/joan-osborne or by calling the box office at (973)-313-2787.
