MAPLEWOOD, NJ — The Kings Food Store on Maplewood Avenue will shutter soon, said the communications rep for the grocery chain. The store is closed today and tomorrow to conduct inventory and then will reopen with merchandise at 50 percent off.

After receiving their 60-day layoff notice less than three weeks ago, “The company was able to offer positions to everyone in that store in other stores if they closed earlier,” said Kim Yorio of YC Media.

Its parent company, KB US Holdings, Inc., is filing for Chapter 11 in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York. Six locations of Kings and Balducci’s markets were not part of the 27-store sale to ACME Markets.

Although Yorio said earlier that Maplewood was being “actively marketed,” today she told TAPinto SOMA that “they didn’t have an offer for Maplewood. So closing sooner is better for the team, because they’ve all now been offered roles in new stores should they choose to take them.”

“We were sad to have been informed of the closure,” said Mayor Frank McGehee. “Since the first communication about a potential closure we started working with KINGS corporate and the broker to find a new grocery store company." He added that "conversations with potential future occupants will continue.”

The closing date is not set yet, said Yorio. “They have to…sell down the store,” she said, so after completing the inventory “they will reopen for essentially a 50 percent off sale and then as the store is emptied out then people will start to be transferred and the store will close permanently.”
