Livingston UNICO to Hold the First Annual Brendan P. Tevlin Memorial Fund Charity Golf Tournament

LIVINGSTON, NJ — The UNICO National Livingston Chapter has amassed 144 golfers and is still accepting dinner-guest applications for the First Annual Brendan P. Tevlin Memorial Fund Charity Golf Tournament to be held at Cedar Hill Golf and Country Club on Thursday, Sept. 10. With the community’s support, the tournament will help the Tevlin family and Seton Hall Preparatory School (SHP) to redevelop and renew the main athletic field in honor of the 19-year-old SHP Lacrosse alum who tragically lost his life in June of 2014.

Through an all-day golf tournament, culminating with cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, dinner and awards, Livingston UNICO will remember and celebrate the New Jersey State Golf Association (NJSGA) Caddie Scholar’s life while also raising funds to rebuild the field Brendan thrived on for so many years. Until Tuesday, Sept. 8, community members can still participate in the celebration dinner with a $125 donation.

“You hear a lot of nonsense that goes on in the world, but you still see people that have a heart and that still care,” said Livingston UNICO Executive Vice President Mike Anello, who facilitated the event. “Brendan was a young kid who lost his life tragically and hopefully we can keep him alive by running these charities.”

According to Livingston UNICO President Kevin Francione, the Livingston business community was eager to contribute prizes to raffle off and offer in a silent auction at the event. Francione said the Livingston PBA was instrumental in soliciting local businesses and managed to collect more than 50 prizes, including gift cards to restaurants, sunglasses, spa treatments and more, as well as a plethora of golfers and dinner guests.

“I’m actually overwhelmed with the amount of support we’ve gotten,” said Francione. “I’ve never seen this at a golf outing that I’ve ever been to, I cannot believe the turnout we’ve gotten. The business community has been very generous toward this event.”

According to Francione, Brendan’s parents were touched that UNICO wanted to do something of this stature in their son’s name. Michael Tevlin, Brendan’s father, told NJSGA that Brendan cherished his experiences on the SHP field and expressed the family’s belief that giving back to the school by renewing the main athletic field would be the best way to appropriately and meaningfully honor Brendan.

"The field is in the center of everything," Michael said in the interview.  "So much bad happened right there, we want the field to be something good.  To us, it's a symbol that good is going to overcome evil.  We took something terrible and made something good out of it." 

Anello said he was blown away by the overwhelming response the charity golf tournament has received thus far and expressed his pride for the Livingston community and the Tevlin family.

“First and most importantly, I believe that by doing events like this and remembering Brendan, we’re keeping his spirit alive,” said Francione. “I also believe it shows that UNICO is an organization that wants to reach out to the community and work with the community.”
