NEWARK, NJ - The man who was found dead in Maplewood at about 4 a.m. on Memorial Day, May 30, has been identified, according to a release from Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray and Maplewood Police Chief Robert J. Cimino.
The deceased, who was found in the area of Hickory Dr. and Wyoming Ave., has been identified as Samuel Smith, Jr., 60, of Newark, stated the release. Smith lived alone in Newark, and notification of next of kin did not occur until Friday, June 17, stated the release.
Smith sustained fatal injuries when he was struck by a hit and run driver.
The driver of the vehicle has not yet been identified, and the investigation is active and ongoing. The investigation is being handled by the Maplewood Police Department and the Essex County Prosecutor's Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force.
