MAPLEWOOD, NJ - Maplewood Middle School (MMS) is investigating a fake Instagram account that was created in the name of Principal Dara Gronau and apparently includes “insensitive statements” and threats of reprisals for student’s political beliefs.

An email from Gronau sent to parents Monday indicated the account was created over the weekend, but deleted Monday.

It also said the source remained unknown, but included a warning that such false efforts would not be tolerated.

On Monday, April 23, 2018 it came to my attention that someone created a false Instagram account under the name @daracrockergronau on April 21 or 22, 2018. The account used a relatively recent photo of me that someone found online.

The same photo was used by SOMSD Board of Education when I was named as the principal of MMS, so some students at first believed the account was real. For a short while, the false account was active and approximately 100 students followed the account.

Unfortunately, while active, the person who created the account made insensitive statements to students and responded to students with insults about their political beliefs and plans to “report” them.  At some point during the day on Monday, April 23, 2018 the account was deleted.

If you have further information about this matter, please reach out to me directly.

As you deem appropriate, please remind your children that creating false accounts is a violation of the acceptable use policy and the SOMSD code of conduct.

Regards,

Dara Crocker Gronau, MMS Principal
